Dialogues with Tomorrow - Dark Ecologies

Thinking Ahead - What sort of legacy will we feel proud to hand on

Dialogues with Tomorrow - Dark Ecologies

Following the success of the 2010 series, Hikurangi is proudly supporting a second season of Dialogues with Tomorrow, a series of stimulating not lecturing lectures produced by Now Future.

Dialogues with Tomorrow brings together artists, scientists, business people and thinkers to have constructive dialogue on themes related to climate change. In each session an artist or cultural commentator presents ideas and work inspired by environmental issues. A response is provided by an expert in the field, followed by a lively illuminating discussion to bring together the knowledge, ideas and reactions of the speakers.

Dark Ecologies
If you are in Auckland, join the NowFuture team on Wednesday 25th May at 10:30am for the latest dialogue entitled, Dark Ecologies.

How do we make sense of immense phenomena, such as climate change and electromagnetic radiation from cellphones, which are real, but real in ways which most of us do not yet directly experience? As Slavoj Žižek puts it, drawing on the work of ecotheorist Timothy Morton, “It is very hard to get used to the idea that the catastrophe, far from being imminent, has already taken place”.

Morton, together with technocultural historian author Douglas Kahn, offer ways in which we can productively think about, represent and respond to unseen energies, or nonhuman ‘hyperobjects’ phenomena like radioactive materials, electromagnetic fields, and climate change.
