National Cycle Network: Fora

Thinking Ahead - What sort of legacy will we feel proud to hand on

National Cycle Network: Fora

There is no commonly owned long term vision for the National Cycleway, nor a means to secure it beyond the current budgeted $50m. The cycleway is a very important symbol of “can-do” action on a potentially sustainable solution – with the PM’s attention.

We have played the role of facilitator and nexus for the many and varied cycle interests as cycleways have emerged as the centre-piece for low carbon tourism as well as a central government interest for boosting the rural economy.

Hikurangi has hosted timely cross-sector fora to bring national cycling, tourism and economic and community development experts and practitioners together to find common ground and create ideas for action. We have helped to build support for the cycleways and the vision for a national network as well as to get practical advice and contacts to those who needed it.

“I would like to thank you all, for the very valuable work you are all doing for the National Cycleway project. This is a very exciting time for cycle tourism & your efforts have kept things on the move & in the public eye.” ~Tim de Jong then chair of Cycle Tour Operators NZ, referring to a Hikurangi initiated effort.
